“I used to come to New York and look up at these tall buildings and say, 'Who will ever know who I am?' He then looked at me and said, “But you changed that for me. You made me famous.”

Robert was paying me a big compliment, and I was flattered.

He was thanking me for all the publicity my company generated for him.

But the truth is no one else ever really makes you famous. You make yourself famous by the decisions you make and the actions you take.

What if Robert and his wife Kim had never contacted my company when someone referred them to us?  What if they’d left my number sitting in a drawer somewhere? The Only Two Ways to Become
a Super-Successful Author

There are two ways to become a bestselling author:

Way #1:  The “Get Lucky” Approach A precious few authors are like winners of the lottery jackpot. They write a book that hits a nerve and the rest is history.  J.K. Rowling, the author of Harry Potter, is one example of this kind of success. She wrote her book, was a discovered by an agent, did almost no marketing and was catapulted to fame and fortune. She never had any idea her book would be so successful.

Every author dreams of this happening, but of the more than 175,000 books published every year, your chances of having yours get to the top of this heap without a pre-determined marketing plan are slim indeed.  It’s really like winning the lottery; it happens but you certainly can’t count on it happening to you.

Way #2:   The Intentional Approach -- Authors who dream of selling a million books and then actually succeed at doing it are very strategic and intentional about how they do it. They determine what they need to do, who they need to market to and then they make it happen.

But they play the game in very different ways than most authors. They don’t just work hard at promoting their book. They first build a platform of influence from which they can launch their book to bestseller status.

To become a Million Dollar Author you need
" F-A-M-E" (not just "fame")

In the last twenty-one years, it’s been my privilege to advise, consult and learn from many authors who are what I call “Million Dollar Authors” – people who've made more than a million dollars from their books.

I’ve noticed all these authors have four things in common which I describe with the acronym “F-A-M-E.”

“F” stands for having a Focused Plan.  Most authors have a lot of “ideas” and “intentions” but no real plan for how they’re going to get where they want to go. Not true of million dollar authors.

For example, one of my favorite books is Rick Warren’s The Purpose Driven Life. It’s a great book, but that’s not the only reason it’s sold more than 24 million copies! A focused marketing plan made that happen.

Before writing The Purpose Driven Life, Warren wrote a book for pastors and church leaders called The Purpose Driven Church. He developed an extensive network of pastors and church leaders who began to look to him for advice on growing and managing their churches.

When The Purpose Driven Life came out, Warren was able to get pastors and ministers to recommend the book to their church members. Those leaders then encouraged members to buy several copies and give them away to friends and relatives. This specific strategy resulted in many people’s lives being changed and millions of books being sold. That’s the power of having a focused plan, and in a minute I’ll reveal how I’m going to help you develop yours.

“A” stands for getting A Lot More Exposure. You need publicity and lots of it. Deepak Chopra told me that after appearing on Oprah he quickly sold 800,000 books and his career immediately went to a whole new level.  But I also know before getting on Oprah, he spent many years toiling in the trenches, doing interviews, workshops and speaking anywhere he could find people who would listen. In a minute, I’ll reveal how a former Oprah guest booker and I are going to help you come up with your game plan to get booked as a guest on top national TV shows.

But remember, you can have huge success without ever getting on Oprah. In fact, I know many authors who make six and even seven-figure incomes without ever appearing on her show. But like other Million Dollar Authors, they're  doing things every day to get exposure for their books wherever they can. Remember, radio, TV, print and on-line publicity are just the beginning.
